SuicaのICカードとしての構造は、ループコイルとFeliCaチップが搭載されたフレキシブル基板を2枚のPVC樹脂で挟み、さらにその表層に印刷を施したPET-G樹脂を重ねた、計5層で構成されています。

このカードを溶媒であるジクロロメタン(塩化メチレン)溶液に浸すと、PVC樹脂やPET樹脂は溶媒に負けて溶解しますが、フレキシブル基板を構成するポリイミド樹脂は溶けないため、最終的に基板だけが取り出せるという寸法です。
